Business
directories

Early directories were created as city registers and local gazetteers to list merchants, professionals, and civic officials, catering primarily to traveling salesmen and traveling merchants. These books were organized geographically and alphabetically, featuring categorized business lists, municipal histories, and prominent advertisements.
