Bowen's Park
c1890
Bowen's Park, about 3 miles north of Port Hope, was located on the southern portion of Daniel Bowen's 65-acre property on lots 9 and 10 of concession 3, Hope Township. Its precise site is unknown, although it was popular enough to have been the subject of at least two postcards.
The camp's likely location, shown on the map, is based on the entries in the Powers' 1890 log and topography of the area. It was along the Ganaraska river, labelled Gochingomink creek, east of the present-day Sylvan Glen Road bridge and west of the small creek that flows into the river.
A short walk in from the road brings us to a steep hill, down which no carriage could have travelled. As supplies had to be carried to the camp site, it is reasonable to assume it was located on the flat spot along the river just south of the bottom of the hill.
A recent search of the area with a metal detector revealed nothing.
