Robert Taft (c1645)

In 1679 Robert and Sarah Taft are believed to have emigrated from Ireland to settle in Mendon County, Massachusetts.

My present mission is to find out the actual first name of my ggggrandfather Taft - Donald, Daniel or David - who married Mary Greenleaf.

...from the Taft Family Genealogy Page (freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~taft/):
Donald Taft (Alpheus4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Robert1) born 1794 at Mendon, Ma; died 1860. Children of Donald5 Taft and Mary Greenleaf were David, Cornelius, Samuel, Alpheus and Gilyam.
The data in this descendent listing was extracted from the 1999 "alltaft.ged" GEDCOM file posed on the old Taft Family Association web page.

"Donald" Taft was reportedly born in Mendon County, about fifty miles west of Boston, Massachusetts. The early Canadian Tafts were only found in Ameliasburgh and Sophiasburgh, Prince Edward County, Ontario.

According to his daughter Jane's death registration, her father is listed as Daniel. His son David's marriage entry has him as Daniel, although his death entry claims David. Mary (Greenleaf) Taft's obituary states Donald.

His son Gilbert's marriage entry has the following:
Gilbert Taft, 34, farmer, Ontario, Ameliasburg, s/o Daniel Taft and Mary Greenleaf...

David's death entry states that his father "David" was born in Ontario, while Mary's obit has him born in the US. Unfortunately, none of the other children's death registrations - where found - have listed parents.

So, if anyone has definitive information about Daniel/David/Donald Taft's actual given name, please get in touch!
