John Kyle & Catherine Oliver (c1750)

The earliest mention of Barbara's Kyle line appears in the Spittal United Presbyterian parish registers for Thomas Kyle, christened 25 May 1783, s/o John Kyle and Elizabeth Carse. On the 1841 spittal census return, Thomas is listed as 55 with a wife, Elizabeth, and son, John. (In that census, the ages were rounded off ot the nearest 5, making this connection quite reasonable.)

Thomas carried on his father's tradition as a seaman or salmon fisherman. The parish records state at least five children; his first son, John, was born in 1823.

John was married to Catherine Oliver in St. Andrew's Church, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in 1845. Emigrating to Canada around 1855, John, Catherine and the three children lived in Quebec, where Christopher was born (according to the census returns), before settling in Belleville, Ontario (c1857). There John worked as a fitter at the Grand Trunk Railway station (1860 Canada Directory) living on Caniston Road (Lovell's 1871 Directory).

...1861 Belleville census: (age as of the following birthday)
John Kyle (36), engineer, born England, member of the Church of Scotland
Catherine Kyle (36) born England
Thomas Kyle (14) born England
Elizabeth Kyle (8) born England
Christopher Kyle (5) born Canada East
William Kyle (3) born Canada West
John Kyle (1) born Canada
Christopher Oliver (55) born England
Eleanor Oliver (55) born England
(As shown, Catherine's parents, Christopher and Eleanor, were living with them as a single family in a one-story frame building. So far, I have been unable to trace their whereabouts after that date.)

...1871 Belleville census:
Kyle, John (45), engineer, born Scotland, Scottish Presbyterian or Church of Scotland
Kyle, Catherine (45) born Scotland
Kyle, Thomas (25) born Scotland
Kyle, Elizabeth (20) born Scotland
Kyle, Cristy (15) born Quebec
Kyle, William (13) born Ontario
Kyle, John (11) born Ontario
Kyle, James (7) born Ontario
Kyle, Kitty (4) born Ontario

Sometime before the 1881 census, the family seems to have moved away, possibly to Toronto. John's address at time of death was 196 Cowan Avenue, Toronto.

John is rumoured to have had a sister named Nancy (Lamb?) who emigrated to the United States, but nothing further of this is known.
