The Augustus Jones Return (1799)

The following text has been taken from an article written by the late Percy Climo and published in the 23 March 1981 Colborne Chronicle.

The early settler was required to clear a certain number of acres and erect a dwelling before he/she could obtain a patent or deed to his/her land.

Augustus Jones, the deputy provincial surveyor who had marked off the eleven townships along the north shore of Lake Ontario in the year 1791, was sent to this area by the government to make a detailed check on each settler and the improvements he/she had accomplished.

Jones' report to the government on 01 May 1799 covered five townships: Hope, Hamilton, Haldimand, Cramahe and Percy, reflecting the exact condition of settlement as of early 1799.
